The biographical film 'Kamal Aur Meena' is going to be made on the complex story of love, marriage and relationship between legendary actress Meena Kumari of Hindi cinema and renowned filmmaker Kamal Amrohi. The makers are in final talks with Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan and actress Tripti Dimri to play the two lead roles in this film, which is being made for the international OTT platform Netflix. This information has been confirmed in a report by the international entertainment media Variety India.
The film is directed by Sidharth P Malhotra and produced by Bilal Amrohi, grandson of Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi. The film was officially announced a year ago on social media. The film is currently in pre-production and the legal aspects of the contract with Saif and Tripti are being finalized as well as the shooting schedule is being discussed. The story will depict a very important period in the life of Meena Kumari, known as the 'tragedy queen', and various aspects of her deep love affair with director Kamal Amrohi.
Earlier, there were several attempts to make a biopic on Meena Kumari's colorful life at different times. Vidya Balan was signed to one such project, produced by Pritish Nandy Communications, but later withdrew. In 2024, fashion designer and director Manish Malhotra also announced that he would not direct the Meena Kumari biopic, which was supposed to star Kriti Sanon in the lead role. At various times, actresses like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Kiara Advani were also mentioned for the role of Meena Kumari.
As one of the most influential actresses of the golden age of Hindi cinema, Meena Kumari's career has been filled with timeless creations. Some of her memorable films include 'Baiju Baora' (1952), 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam' (1962), 'Kajal' (1965), 'Phool Aur Pathar' (1966) and 'Pakeezah' (1972). After a long wait, her real-life love and struggle story is now being brought to the big screen.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Barrister Andaliv Rahman has described cinema as a powerful medium for changing the mindset of society and people.
He made these remarks while addressing the chief guest at a function organized on the occasion of 'Film Directors' Day 2026' at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) auditorium yesterday. The function was organized by the Bangladesh Film Directors' Association.
The Information Minister said, "At one time, we might have seen the message that movies gave with our eyes, but it would have been embedded in our hearts. Every movie should have its own character and clear message. Every movie by talented filmmakers, including renowned filmmaker Amjad Hossain, had a social and humane message."
Calling for the production of quality films in the future, the Information Minister said, "We all want to work together in the future so that our films speak again."
