To boost the capacity of Bangladesh Police in tackling cybercrime, the government is planning to form a full-fledged and institutional 'Cyber Security Unit' headed by an Additional IGP. Currently, investigations and forensic analyses of digital crimes are conducted in an isolated manner through Police Headquarters, the Cyber Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police. However, a permanent and integrated framework is needed for this work, stated Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

The Home Minister made these remarks yesterday, Tuesday, while presiding over the 21st Board of Governors meeting of the Police Staff College (PSC) in Mirpur, capital. He said, "Currently, many members with backgrounds in engineering, IT, and computer science are working in the police force. Utilizing their skills, a plan is underway to establish a Cyber Security Unit led by an Additional IGP."

The Minister further added that currently, investigations and forensic analyses of various digital crimes are being conducted on an ad-hoc basis through Police Headquarters, DMP's Cyber Unit, and CID. However, as the nature and scope of cybercrime continue to expand, there is a need to build a permanent and integrated structure.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were also held regarding the introduction of 'Master's in Forensic Science' and 'Master's in Financial Crime and Governance' courses at the Police Staff College. Additionally, topics such as the infrastructural development of the Police Staff College, government approval of PSC rules, review of MRT's proposal regarding the land use of PSC, organizing training for SAARC countries, and celebrating the silver jubilee of the Police Staff College were included in the meeting.

The minutes of the previous 20th Board of Governors meeting were approved with necessary amendments, and the implementation progress of decisions taken in that meeting was also reviewed.

'Awami League Creating Temporary Panic'—

Yesterday, after a coordination meeting on easing traffic congestion in the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed told reporters that miscreants from the banned organization Awami League are trying to create temporary panic by orchestrating sudden flash processions or cocktail blast incidents. Those involved in the incidents that occurred in Gulshan and areas adjacent to the High Court have already been identified by analyzing CCTV footage. Legal action is being taken against them.

Policy for Battery-Powered Auto-Rickshaws—

Identifying the uncontrolled movement of battery-powered auto-rickshaws as one of the main causes of traffic congestion in the capital, the Home Minister stated that the movement of three-wheelers or small vehicles on main roads is contrary to discipline. A process is underway to bring battery-powered auto-rickshaws under a policy framework. However, instead of making anyone suddenly completely unemployed, they are being brought under regulations gradually.

Bi-weekly Coordination Meetings to Ease Traffic Congestion

To ease traffic congestion and maintain normal traffic management due to ongoing mega-project construction work in the capital, coordination meetings will be held every 15 days involving relevant agencies and stakeholders, informed the Home Minister. He said that to ensure all development work in Dhaka City and its surrounding areas is completed in a coordinated manner, this coordination meeting was held bringing together all concerned ministries, departments, and authorities. Special attention is being paid so that one agency does not start digging up the same spot immediately after another agency finishes work.

Salahuddin Ahmed said that to reduce traffic pressure in the capital, the decision to relocate Gabtoli, Mohakhali, and Fulbaria bus terminals outside the city is at its final stage. Land acquisition and overall planning work have already begun.
